In times of crisis, we can find calm

For most of us, the past year has been a year of chaos, change and loss. Everyone experienced some form of loss, but the most universal was the loss of normal connection. We all have experienced anxiety as change became a constant. With all the changes though came new ideas and the chance for growth. As always, it is in times of crisis that we can have the most growth. So how do we grow during times of such massive change? Many of us have had to become more flexible in the way that we reach out to each other or in how we work or learn. Here at Suburban Counseling we have had to learn new technology in order to continue to connect with our clients

As the pandemic continues, our question becomes how to ground and stabilize ourselves in a time of constant change. We need to acknowledge our exhaustion . When our resources have been overwhelmed, we must realize that we’ve done our best and let go until tomorrow. It is a step at a time, a moment at a time, a day at a time that we move toward a new normal. We need to develop new coping skills, learn to accept help, and to try to be more intentional in our decisions. Many of us have learned to connect through zoom or outside gatherings. We began walking together, reconnecting as families, and discovering our creativity. For most of us though we also need additional help with stress and anxiety.

Mindfulness and breathing techniques can help us utilize our bodies natural resources to calm and mitigate the stress impacting our nervous system. Meditation and controlled breathing produce a natural relaxation response which we often teach in therapy. For that purpose, we are sharing part of a breathing/relaxation audio here on our website. We hope you find it useful. May we all find more peace as we move through this new year.
